As the Chief Legal & Transformation Officer at Domain Group, an ASX-listed property technology and services business, I am honored to lead our legal affairs and transformation initiatives. Domain employs approximately 1200 people with primary operations in Australia and also staff in New Zealand and the Philippines. With over 20 years of extensive experience in legal and governance across various industry sectors, I am dedicated to steering our company through the complexities of legal compliance, risk management, and strategic transformation.
My career has spanned private practice at top-tier firms in the UK and Australia, as well as significant in-house advisory roles in Technology, Media, Retail, Banking, and Insurance sectors. This diverse experience has equipped me with a deep understanding of corporate M&A, corporate governance, and a strong interest in data and privacy.
At Domain Group, I lead the Legal function, where my responsibilities encompass all aspects of legal compliance and risk management, including mergers and acquisitions (M&A), privacy, cyber security, intellectual property (IP), employment law, and litigation. Additionally, I serve as the Company Secretary and Privacy Officer, ensuring that we adhere to listed company regulatory standards and data best practices.
Two years ago, I expanded my remit to include leading Domain’s Project Governance & Advisory function. This role demonstrates my versatility and commitment to driving both legal and operational excellence within our organization.
Influential Experiences
Reflecting on my career, I can confidently say that the client secondments I undertook as a junior and mid-level lawyer had a profound impact on me. These experiences provided invaluable insights into the different approaches companies take to managing and addressing risk, their varying levels of risk tolerance, and their requirements for reporting and transparency. When I was in the early stages of establishing the Domain legal team, I drew on these secondment experiences to determine the approach that was best suited for Domain.
As a leader, I am conscious of my leadership shadow—the impact I have on those around me.
In today’s corporate environment, I believe commercial pragmatism is crucial—the ability to balance technical legal advice with business objectives. Strong communication and stakeholder engagement, along with influencing skills, are also essential for effective leadership.
As a leader, I am conscious of my leadership shadow—the impact I have on those around me. I strive to operate with high integrity and treat everyone with respect, regardless of their position within the organization.
Technology's Impact on the Legal Landscape
The legal landscape is evolving rapidly, with technology playing a transformative role. At Domain, our legal team leverages technology to enhance collaboration, drive efficiency, and facilitate real-time information sharing. We also use technology to manage roles and responsibilities on action items and matters. Additionally, AI is an area we expect to increasingly utilize, recognizing its potential to revolutionize our legal functions.
Looking ahead, I believe privacy reform and AI-related legislation will have significant impacts on our industry, particularly for data-led organizations. These emerging legal evolutions will necessitate proactive adaptation and compliance strategies.
Advice to Aspiring Legal Leaders
To the next generation of legal professionals aspiring to leadership roles, I offer this advice: focus on developing your business and commercial skills. Understand your company’s strategy, revenue, and cost drivers. Build strong financial acumen and be able to grasp the financial and commercial aspects of any contract or term sheet, in addition to the legal aspects.
I also encourage future legal leaders to develop their people leadership skills early in their careers. Think about the impact you can have on individuals and teams. Be mindful of your leadership shadow and act like a leader well before you are in a formal leadership role.
My role as Chief Legal & Transformation Officer at Domain Group allows me to combine deep legal expertise with strategic foresight, guiding our company through the dynamic legal landscape and driving transformative change.
