Two market themes are creating new opportunities for the construction industry: A growing demand for electric vehicles and hybrids; and Environmental Social Governance (ESG), a set of standards used by socially conscious companies.
Electric vehicles could be one of the biggest market disruptions of our lifetime. Construction firms with diverse services will be a natural fit for customers investing in new battery technologies. These construction firms will have the opportunity to build out the supply chain, which includes the manufacturing of batteries and their components, electric vehicle assembly lines, charging infrastructure and battery recycling.
A wide variety of manufacturers are aligning their businesses with ESG as they commit to reducing their carbon footprints and achieving the carbon neutrality goals of the future. There will be an increased emphasis on conducting business with renewable energy, as well as new manufacturing techniques that reduce the release of CO2 into the atmosphere. This trend will require our customers to become increasingly innovative, and in turn, they will be seeking contractors to serve as partners who provide innovative solutions.
While much of this initiative currently centers on electric vehicles, this new market will impact virtually all manufacturers and energy producers. To provide services that meet our customers’ ambitious goals, contractors will need to thoroughly understand these changes in our marketplace, as well as know the emerging players and the relationships within that marketplace.

We can expect major overhauls to our national transportation and energy infrastructure that will provide renewable energy solutions to meet localized energy demands. To meet new demands like electric vehicle charging, traditional energy distribution will be inadequate. The needs of major large-scale manufacturing will require updates to our national grid, with increased focus on localized onsite power generation at facilities.
It’s imperative that we support these emerging technologies – not only to thrive in these new marketplaces and secure the future of our businesses, but also to secure a better future for our children and our planet.
